The Vietnam War

Graphic Design
About This Project

The cover for “The Vietnam War – An Assessment by South Vietnam’s Generals” was my first project for the Modern Southeast Asia Series for Texas Tech University Press. The cover had some interesting restraints. Since this book was information gathered from South Vietnamese generals they didn’t want the cover to show any obvious American imagery. Searching through the Vietnam Archive at Texas Tech I found this image of the iconic Huey helicopter which has become synonymous with the war. The image itself, generic enough to represent the any of the combatants fighting for South Vietnam, but at the same time specific to represent the war itself. When designing with the typography I remembered images from news reports during the war showing bombs raining down from bombers and used that as inspiration for my typographic approach.
