Below the Caprock | 42"x30" | Oil Paint on Stretched Canvas | 2014
Below the Caprock feels like something of a breakthrough painting for me.
For quite a while, I had been searching for a looser way of painting... something that felt more natural and less self-conscious. With this painting, I felt as though I had finally begun to find it. Now the challenge is to keep following that direction and see where it leads.
The painting was completed in the studio, but the research for it came from an area about thirty minutes north of Clovis, New Mexico, just below the cliffs marking the edge of the Llano Estacado.
There is tremendous natural beauty in Eastern New Mexico... sometimes you just have to look a little harder to find it.
